MOVIE NEWS – It may be early to celebrate, but Gold Derby, the awards-odds site whose forecasts often prove right, now lists Ariana Grande, star of Wicked Part 2, as the number-one favorite.

She is being penciled in for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar even though the film has yet to open widely. Still, confidence is high after last year’s first part, which left little doubt about the singer’s merits. Those few who have seen the new installment describe Grande’s performance as “marvelously magical” and “heart-wrenchingly brilliant.” At Gold Derby, rankings are shaped by votes from industry experts, critics, and users.

Meanwhile, so many people are speculating that the singer is turning her back on pop for film and TV that she addressed it directly. “Music will of course always be present in my life,” she told The New York Times. “That’s a message to my fans who are about to have a heart attack.”

Suspicions that she’s going full movie star aren’t unfounded, as she recently wrapped a new entry in the Meet the Parents franchise, Focker In-Law, and she will also appear in Season 13 of American Horror Story.
