The latest Nintendo Switch 2 firmware not only squashes bugs, but it also makes one of the last generation’s standout games much more enjoyable on Nintendo’s new hybrid console.
Backwards compatibility on the Nintendo Switch 2 has been one of the platform’s most hotly debated topics. While Nintendo has largely delivered in this area, several titles still failed to run flawlessly on the new hardware. These were not first-party exclusives, but hugely popular third-party releases such as NieR: Automata. In this context, the most recent firmware update has come as very good news for many players.
Nintendo Switch 2 system version 21.0.1 has been released with the clear goal of making several games originally designed for the first hybrid console easier to play on its successor. Before getting to that, though, it is worth highlighting the bugs that have been addressed: Nintendo has fixed two error codes that appeared when attempting to transfer data from an original Switch to a Switch 2 via local wireless, a very common step for anyone migrating their full library and settings to the new console.
The company has also tackled a rarer, but equally irritating, problem. Certain wireless controllers and Bluetooth audio devices could disconnect after the console was woken from sleep mode or after airplane mode was disabled, an issue that several users had reported on social media (as noted by Gamespot). On the games side, however, this new Switch 2 update improves backwards compatibility and eliminates several glitches present in the Switch version of NieR: Automata when it is played on Nintendo Switch 2.
The previous Nintendo Switch 2 firmware, version 21.0.0, had already resolved compatibility issues with major games such as Batman: Arkham Knight, Hitman 3 Cloud Version, and Windjammers, though some titles, including Borderlands 3, still need additional work. Finally, and importantly, the new update does not fix the ongoing problems with certain third-party docks. In those cases, manufacturers are expected to provide their own solutions through dedicated firmware updates.
