The Verso Actor In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Reveals His Favorite Ending – And It’s Not About The Story

Ben Starr, the actor behind Verso in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has a favorite ending, but his pick isn’t tied to the RPG’s plot. Major spoilers ahead for the game’s endings if you haven’t finished it yet.

2025 delivered standout releases, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has hooked thousands with an unusual narrative, memorable cast, and a sweat-inducing combat system. Sandfall Interactive’s RPG set a The Game Awards record for most nominations, then swept the Golden Joystick Awards, where Ben Starr (Verso) and Jennifer English (Maelle) took home Best Supporting Actor and Best Lead Actress. For Starr, the key to that success lies in how he performs in one particular ending, which has become his personal favorite.

Spoiler Warning

The quotes below from Ben Starr and Jennifer English concern one of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s endings and include major plot details. If you plan to play soon, consider stopping here.

At the British ceremony, the game won seven awards. Speaking to GamesRadar+, both actors named their preferred conclusion. The most surprising answer came from Ben Starr, whose choice wasn’t about Sandfall’s tragic arc or Verso’s fate across possible outcomes but about his own work.

“I chose Maelle’s ending because I really like how I act there.” In other words, the pick isn’t about preserving the canvas or chasing a tidy, happy end for Gustave, Lune, Sciel, and company. “Please play Maelle’s ending. I’m really proud of some of the things I do there,” Starr says. “I received this [Golden Joystick Awards] trophy because I did so well in that ending, choose Maelle’s route to see why.” The final image can still hint at a sadder outcome for Maelle.

Jennifer English likewise favors Maelle’s ending, but for a different reason. It has nothing to do with performance, just the character: “I mean, Maelle is my girl. Let her live a delulu fantasy life.”

Gustave’s actor says his TGA nod owes much to Maxence Cazorla

The cast has reflected on their recent industry nominations. Charlie Cox, up for Best Performance at The Game Awards, accepted the honor with humility, stressing how much Maxence Cazorla contributed. Cazorla handled most of Gustave’s physical performance via motion capture and voiced Esquie in both French and English.

Sandfall’s momentum shows in trophies and in how its actors have adopted these arcs as personal favorites. Which ending becomes the community’s go-to canon will be decided by players through replays and debate.
