The PS4 Refuses To Die And Is About To Break A Legendary PS2 Record

The PlayStation 4 has been written off more than once, yet Sony’s console keeps proving everyone wrong. While the PS5 dominates the current-generation market, the massive user base of the previous system is still strong enough to justify new releases well into 2027.

All signs suggest that the PlayStation 2 may soon lose its long-standing crown as the longest-supported console in gaming history. When the PlayStation 5 launched, many assumed the PS4 would quickly fade away. Instead, the system that debuted in 2013 is still very much alive in 2025, with no immediate end in sight.

One of the most telling signs came during The Game Awards 2025. Several developers and publishers updated their release schedules, confirming continued support for Sony’s eighth-generation console over the next two years. That alone pushes the PS4 toward an active lifespan of up to 14 years.

PS4 Games Are Still Coming After 14 Years

According to PushSquare, PS4 support is now locked in until at least 2027. A clear example is Capcom’s announcement of Mega Man: Dual Override, an action-platformer set to launch in 2027 on the usual platforms, including the PlayStation 4.

Although PlayStation Studios has fully shifted its focus to PS5, third-party developers remain hesitant to abandon a console with over 117 million units sold worldwide. While major franchises such as Call of Duty and EA Sports FC are expected to drop PS4 and Xbox One support starting in 2026, smaller-budget and less technically demanding games are likely to keep appearing on older hardware.

The most surprising aspect is the record the PS4 is poised to surpass. The PlayStation 2 launched in 2000 and received major releases until Pro Evolution Soccer 2014, giving it roughly 13 years of commercial relevance. With the PS4 arriving in late 2013 and Mega Man: Dual Override scheduled for 2027, Sony’s console will reach 14 years of new game releases. It would not be shocking to see PS4 titles launching at a time when the PlayStation 6 is already available.
