As always, it is great to see brave and persistent modders restoring content that was cut from the retail version.
In November, the beta version of Fallout: New Vegas was discovered on an Xbox 360 dev kit, and it was 2 GB larger than the retail release. It contained locations, textures, and even complete NPCs that developer Obsidian Entertainment ultimately removed to keep the final game’s size manageable. However, what was too much for New Vegas on an Xbox 360 disc was nowhere near enough for a heavily modded PC game, and the modding community spent weeks meticulously combing through the beta to restore the most interesting lost elements.
First of all, an NPC included in the Collector’s Edition card pack was missing from the finished game. Marilyn, Mr. House’s second Securitron girlfriend, who is also referenced by Veronica in the final version, has finally returned. Several mods bring Marilyn back. As for Mr. House, his original, Steve Buscemi-like and rather repulsive appearance has also returned thanks to the Restored Beta Mr House mod. If we want to go even deeper, the Lucky 38 casino originally had its own unique trash cans, visible in the intro scene, and these can also be restored using the Lucky 38 Trash Cans Restored mod.
When it comes to locations, Beta Goodsprings Restored and Prospector Saloon Full Neon Sign Restored bring back parts of the starting town, while Restored Nipton Train Station is one of those additions that simply makes sense. Smaller changes include Original (Red) Tribal Armor Restored and Clean Tops Casino Interior. One of our favorite minor tweaks is Beta Posters Restored, which restores early versions of various casino performer posters and makes the Sunset Sarsaparilla poster slightly more suggestive than in the final game.
It is always great to see something that was ultimately left out make a proper comeback.
