Song Sung Blue arriving at Christmas is no coincidence: it’s a layered film whose message fits the holiday mood, and one critic even described it as “damn well made”. Starring Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman, the story initially feels familiar: a struggling couple refuses to give up on their dreams and finds happiness through making music together. Craig Brewer’s film, however, goes much further, elevating the material with emotional depth and a fresh perspective on love and perseverance.
This true story was previously explored by Greg Koh in his 2008 documentary of the same title, making it easy to see why it also captured Brewer’s imagination. In the 1980s, a Milwaukee hairdresser and an auto mechanic, Claire Stengl and Mike Sardina, decided to form a Neil Diamond tribute duo. They quickly became hugely popular in their local community. The film portrays both their turbulent private life and their remarkable rise.
“The story is also about how much strength it gives you when someone believes in you while you strongly doubt yourself,” Kate Hudson told The Christian Post. “It’s also about the power of music. Claire and Mike fall in love through music, and music keeps them together through all the joy and sorrow they have to go through. Music lifts and heals them.”
The Oscar-nominated actress (Almost Famous) received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in Song Sung Blue.
