MOVIE NEWS – Before Fallout, Ella Purnell had already become one of Zack Snyder’s biggest fans. The actress was set to be a key figure in the director’s zombie universe at Netflix and also appeared in Rebel Moon.
For years, many film journalists and influencers have kept a close and often hostile eye on Zack Snyder. His movies are frequently labeled pretentious, erratic, overly dark, and lacking narrative cohesion. At the same time, the director of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is deeply appreciated, not only by his fanbase but also by nearly everyone who has worked with him, including Ella Purnell.
With the premiere of the second season of Fallout on Prime Video, the British actress has once again stepped into the spotlight, continuing to showcase her natural on-screen charisma. This presence is paired with acting skills strong enough to lead multi-million-dollar productions, such as the adaptation of one of the most successful video games ever made. That potential was already evident when Netflix cast her as the lead in a major science fiction project directed by Snyder, even if the film failed to become a massive hit and its sequel was ultimately canceled, though not before spawning a peculiar spin-off.
“It Was Something I Had Never Done Before”
We are, of course, talking about Army of the Dead, the filmmaker’s distinctive attempt to revive the zombie genre. The story drew inspiration from classics like Escape from New York (1981) and Aliens (1986), while also embracing the spirit of heist films such as The Italian Job. Although the movie did not meet expectations, it delivered several memorable performances, including Purnell’s role as Kate Ward.
Reflecting on the shoot, she said: “It was good. It was a great experience; something I’d never done before. Over the last three or four years, I’ve been actively trying new things to see what I enjoy. Being in an action film, especially a pretty gory horror one, was fantastic.” She also highlighted the intense character work involved: “It’s a completely new experience; being surrounded by prosthetics, zombies, weapons, and all that kind of stuff feels like living in a strange little bubble.”
“Zack Is an Absolute Legend”
What impressed Purnell the most was working with Zack Snyder himself. “He’s an absolute legend. I love him to death; I’d follow him to the ends of the earth. He’s a great guy with incredible energy.” Those words led to another collaboration, as she later lent her voice to The Seneschal: A Rebel Moon Story, a narrative podcast prequel for Netflix.
In the end, even if her time in Las Vegas did not achieve the cultural impact of some of Snyder’s other works, it proved to be the perfect showcase for Purnell’s affinity with post-apocalyptic worlds.
