Battlefield 6 Outsold Call of Duty in the U.S. – And That’s a Big Deal

Battlefield 6 ended 2025 as the best-selling game in the United States, meaning it officially surpassed Call of Duty in overall annual sales – a result many would have called impossible not long ago. Mat Piscatella, Circana’s managing director and a leading industry analyst, published the final U.S. software and hardware report for 2025, and the numbers strongly suggest EA and Battlefield Studios’ work has paid off. The overall market did grow, but the biggest drivers weren’t traditional game sales – subscriptions and mobile content did most of the heavy lifting.

Mat Piscatella, Circana’s managing director and gaming industry analyst, released the final report on U.S. game software and hardware sales for 2025. It seems that Electronic Arts and Battlefield Studios’ work last year paid off; Battlefield 6 was the best-selling game in the U.S. in 2025. It officially surpassed Call of Duty in sales, which many thought would be impossible for Battlefield. While everyone expected it to be serious competition for Call of Duty, hardly anyone thought Battlefield 6 would be powerful enough to knock Call of Duty off the sales charts.

Although Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 topped the monthly sales charts in December, it only reached fifth place overall in premium sales in 2025. Despite performance issues on PC, Monster Hunter Wilds had a strong enough start to hold on to fourth place for the year. Borderlands 4, another game with performance issues at launch, took third place. Meanwhile, NBA 2K26 fell behind Battlefield 6 to take second place.

Also noteworthy are The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and Monster Hunter Wilds. They are the only non-shooter or annual sports game in the top 10. Ghost of Yotei just missed out on a spot, coming in at number 11. This also shows how well Sucker Punch’s latest game was received. Grand Theft Auto V was once again one of the best-selling games of the year, barely making the list at number 20.

Although software sales were strong, they did not account for the 1.4% growth of the U.S. gaming market in 2025 compared to 2024, which reached $60.7 billion. This growth came from mobile games, hardware spending – notably on the Nintendo Switch 2 – and subscription services. However, as Piscatella notes, the increase in spending was not due to more people spending money on games; rather, it was due to everything becoming more expensive, including subscription services.

Unsurprisingly, the Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling console in the US last year, with 4.4 million units sold. The PlayStation 5 came in second.
