James Cameron’s Next Project Could Be About Nuclear Bombs?! The Director Discusses His Plans

MOVIE NEWS – Legendary filmmaker James Cameron has bought the rights to the yet-to-be-published novel Ghosts of Hiroshima…

James Cameron still has several years of work ahead of him with Avatar. But this does not mean that the director does not think about the times after the release of the fifth and final film of the sci-fi action saga. It was revealed yesterday that it has bought the rights to Ghosts of Hiroshima, Charles Pellegrino’s upcoming novel, to develop a feature film set during World War II.

According to Deadline, the director of The Terminator and The Abyss will use the book and Charles Pellegrino’s previous novel, The Last Train from Hiroshima as the basis for a film, which he will shoot as soon as he has some free time in his calendar. As we know, he is currently very busy with Avatar. But what exactly will “this uncompromising film” be about?

James Cameron is filming about a man who survived two atomic bombs

The as-yet-untitled film will tell the story of a Japanese man who survived the nuclear explosion in Hiroshima, boarded a train to Nagasaki, and then survived the atomic explosion in Nagasaki in 1945.

The two novels mentioned above describe in detail the events and consequences of the nuclear attacks carried out by the United States, which changed the world forever, giving voice to the survivors of these two fateful days in human history, who – we know – will somehow try to be included in this cinematic account.

In an interview with Deadline, James Cameron revealed that he always wanted to make a film about this topic.

“It’s a subject that I’ve wanted to do a film about, that I’ve been wrestling with how to do it, over the years. I met Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a survivor of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, just days before he died. He was in the hospital. He was handing the baton of his personal story to us, so I have to do it. I can’t turn away from it.” While visiting Yamaguchi, Cameron and Pellegrino pledged to “pass on his unique and harrowing experience to future generations.”

This is how James Cameron returns to real events after one of his most successful and award-winning films, Titanic. We don’t know more for now. As we said, he has a lot of work ahead of him with Avatar. After all, we won’t be able to see the fifth film in cinemas until 2031, when the director will be 77 years old…
