Bethesda’s Games Are Massive! Todd Howard Reveals the Reason Behind Their Size!

Bethesda has long prided itself on massive open worlds, offering an unparalleled level of exploration.

 

Bethesda games are known for their sprawling, detailed open worlds that give players complete freedom from the get-go. Along with immersive storytelling, modding capabilities, decision-making freedom, and role-playing elements, these aspects have defined Bethesda titles for years.

But why are these games so big? Todd Howard, director of Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, explains in a BAFTA interview the reason behind their huge scale. Here’s what Howard had to say:
“At Bethesda, we cut very little from our games, which is why they end up so irresponsibly big. The whole team puts an immense amount of creativity into them,” Howard explained.

“It’s not just about me, obviously, and I think that’s what makes them special,” he revealed (via Insider Gaming). Howard emphasized the teamwork and creativity that goes into making these massive games. However, he acknowledged that large content sometimes doesn’t appeal to everyone if not executed well, like Starfield, which features over 1,000 planets to explore.

 

Starfield Expansion Approaches

 

On September 30th, Bethesda will release Starfield’s first major expansion, Shattered Space. Bethesda has detailed that the DLC will return to its roots, focusing on a single planet this time instead of space exploration. Players will get to explore 50 new areas, battle new enemies, and find new weapons. A fresh story will also be introduced, along with new factions that will expand the lore even further.
