The head of Epic Games will not rest until he has what he calls a definitive victory over Apple and Google…
A few days ago, we reported that Epic Games had sued Google (again) after its lawsuit against Samsung over the Auto Blocker feature dragged the Alphabet subsidiary into the proceedings. Four years ago, Epic called Apple anti-competitive for its monopolistic practices and anti-competitive restrictions, and then Google received similar “accolades”. In 2023, a judge ruled in Epic’s favor against Google, and since the beginning of the year, Apple has been required by the European Union to allow third-party app stores on devices running iOS.
That’s not enough for Epic. In a speech at Unreal Fest (which we started dissecting the other day), Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney said as much: “For a vibrant digital ecosystem to exist in the future, we need fair competition and an end to these monopoly rent collectors. Apple and Google have a completely broken vision for the world, which is to limit what developers can do, impose more and more restrictions to prevent things like the metaverse from happening, or tax them to the point where they take all the profit. We’re at a point now where game development is expensive, it’s low margin, and game companies are suffering.
Apple and Google are making far more profit off of most games than the developers themselves make, while giving nothing back. And that has to change. The UK and Japan have passed new laws, and there’s important legislation in many major developing countries around the world. And the world is changing for the better. There’s still a lot of work to be done, but we’re going to keep fighting until there’s a final victory,” Sweeney said.
All we can say about him is that he’s a persistent guy…
