Farewell to LittleBigPlanet 3!

There’s still time to buy the game and DLC for the franchise, but soon that opportunity will end.

The announcement on the LittleBigPlanet 3 Twitter account says that after 10 years of playing, creating and sharing content, LittleBigPlanet 3 and the LittleBigPlanet DLCs will be removed from PlayStation Store, and we know when: the end of the season is October 31st, so we’ve got just over three weeks to make up for lost time.

The announcement mentions that anyone who owns LittleBigPlanet 3 or any of the DLC will still have access to the game. This is meant to be a quick reminder that we still have one last chance to buy the game and content, and they didn’t want to do that by suddenly pulling the Sumo Digital developed game from Sony’s digital network without any warning. So this episode was not created by the creators of the franchise, Media Molecule.

The mention of ten years for LittleBigPlanet 3 is no coincidence: it was released on November 18, 2014 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 (support for the older version ended earlier, as the announcement only mentions PS4). Anyone who added the game to their account via PlayStation Plus will still be able to play it (as long as they remain an active subscriber, of course). Of course, this hasn’t helped the public reaction.

On the ResetEra forum, one fan wrote that years of DLC and community will be gone. That’s true, but it removes the community element that made the franchise so memorable: it was always the unique work that the audience could create that made it fun. This mentality was later followed by Media Molecule’s other game, Dreams, on PlayStation 4.

Anyway, it’s interesting that LittleBigPlanet 3 is leaving PlayStation Store on the last day of October. Couldn’t it have waited until the end of the year?
