Dragon Age 4 originally had a completely different style, but as a result of multiple reboots, we didn’t get what BioWare originally intended…
BioWare’s Art Director Matt Rhodes shared no less than eight images of the game on Twitter, and sure enough, the original concept from 2014 is a far cry from what was originally released on October 31st for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC with Dragon Age: The Veilguard: “Way back in 2014, before Dragon Age: Inquisition had even shipped, I started sketching out what cool things could come next. We had momentum, so these quick mock-ups explored where some of the unfinished storylines might lead.” What do we see in the first seven images?
The world is falling apart, so the Divine sends out several elite teams to find answers. The art team loved the idea of having at least one “parallel party,” another group of awesome characters you cross paths with, to suggest a larger world. Chaos spreads, and various factions from around the world come to the Inquisitor for advice. During the chaos across Thedas, three opposing factions stand ready to take advantage of the moment: Tevinter, the Chasind, and the Qunari. In the depths, disturbing enough for the dwarves to do the unthinkable: flee to the surface.
Elves from all over Thedas leave their lives behind to answer a mysterious call from the forest of Arlathan. Meet Solas in Arlathan Forest and the army he’s secretly building. An artist’s sketch of a possible endgame. Solas has raised the titan upon which the city of Minrathous was built to use its power to rip the veil.
Rhodes wrote of the eighth image: “The first real piece of concept art I did for this project. We knew we were going to Tevinter, so this was the first attempt at fleshing that out. A powerful mage being carried on a litter by her elven slaves, and scrappy adventurers trying to evade mage patrols and survive in an urban labyrinth.”
