Even though Larian Studios’ game was released last year (although it was in early access before that…), the public doesn’t seem to mind!
Baldur’s Gate 3 has captivated the world, which is not a big surprise, as it has been made to be meaningful and customizable, and its characters are well-liked (or hated) by the audience. Romance is also possible in this CRPG, and it’s essentially up to us what we do and when we do it, so each playthrough can be markedly different from the next. But this is a single-player RPG, and interest in it tends to dry up relatively quickly… but that doesn’t seem to bother Baldur’s Gate 3, as it continues to have a strong and consistent player base!
That doesn’t mean there are fewer players this year than last, which would be a perfectly logical scenario. Larian’s game, on the other hand, has managed to have even more players than last year! Michael Douse, Larian’s Publishing Director, revealed that the daily peak of concurrent players was 3% higher than in 2023, the daily average was 20% higher, and the daily average game on Steam Deck was a whopping 60% (!) higher. There are several things behind this great success, including the excellent care the community has received from the studio, which has constantly patched the game when needed, new endings for our main characters, and official mod support that has helped make this possible.
Douse also said that the mods are the main reason why people play Baldur’s Gate 3, and they were initially only available on PC, Larian didn’t support them and it took several steps to get them to work (and in case of a bug you would have to reinstall), but now with an official mod manager the game is easily moddable and removing mods is a snap. The Mod Manager now works on consoles too!
It just goes to show that when a studio puts their heart and soul into a game, they get results.
