Currently, 64 developers are working on the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, but that could change drastically next year…
The success of Cyberpunk 2077 has changed everything at CD Projekt RED. The company is determined to continue building on the IP in video games, animated series, and even a live-action film. While the company has focused most of its resources on The Witcher 4, the sequel to CP2077 is still in the preparation stage. In all likelihood, we still have a long way to go before it is released. However, in recent days, some positive news has been shared that suggests that development has accelerated.
The sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 will have twice as many developers by the end of 2025
Project Orion is the codename for the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. At the time of writing, 64 developers are working on the project. The game is currently in pre-production, but CD Projekt RED is doubling its staff by the end of next year. The Boston-based team will grow to over 120 people, the company confirmed during its recent earnings conference call.
The Witcher 4 currently has over 400 developers working on it.
However, CD Projekt will also be supporting other projects, especially the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, over time. “We do not have any issues here apart from regular [problems] scouting for talent that is normal in Poland and in the US. The current team size aligns with our needs, and we plan to further expand the size of the team next year. We actually plan to double the team by the end of the next year,” said Karolina Gnas, vice president of investor relations (via Gamesradar).
CD Projekt is betting big on the IP, and a few days ago, they delighted Cyberpunk 2077 fans by confirming that both the upcoming Netflix animated series and the live-action film following Edgerunners are in development. While the studio works on this ambitious and long-awaited sequel, we may see the next Night City-inspired anime on Netflix first.
