MOVIE NEWS – Lily-Rose Depp recently wowed audiences in Roger Eggers’ Nosferatu, where Bill Skarsgard’s Count Orlok terrified her to the delight of horror fans. However, in a recent interview, the actress revealed that her real childhood trauma came from a dark fantasy starring her father, Johnny Depp.
According to Lily-Rose, the culprit was Tim Burton’s 1990 classic, Edward Scissorhands, where Depp portrayed the titular character—a tragic figure created by a scientist and left with scissors for hands. Initially accepted by the townsfolk, Edward is later vilified and falsely accused of wrongdoing, which deeply impacted young Lily-Rose. She shared with Harper’s Bizarre UK:
“I was traumatized. Not because I thought he was scary, but because everyone was so mean to him, and it made me really upset. I remember being petrified by that, which is odd because I don’t have many memories from when I was that young. It’s a difficult childhood memory.”
Interestingly, Lily-Rose noted that the empathy she feels for Edward parallels her feelings for Nosferatu in her latest film. She added:
“Edward’s the good guy, and Nosferatu’s kind of the bad guy, but there’s a part of me that feels a little empathy for Nosferatu. Am I sick for feeling that way?”
Edward Scissorhands Remains a Timeless Classic
For three decades, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp were synonymous, collaborating on numerous films that are now regarded as classics. Edward Scissorhands not only defined Burton’s signature visual style but also propelled Depp’s career to new heights.
Blending elements of Frankenstein with Grimm fairy tales, Edward Scissorhands offers moments that leave a lasting impression on young viewers. As Lily-Rose pointed out, the ending is particularly heart-wrenching, delivering a message that resonates with society’s real-life “outcasts” despite its fantastical backdrop.
While it may seem unusual for Lily-Rose to feel empathy for both Edward and Nosferatu, their stories share common ground. Both characters seek love and acceptance in their own ways. Of course, Count Orlok’s approach isn’t exactly endearing, but his tragic existence has left a similar imprint on Lily-Rose, much like Depp’s performance as Edward did nearly 35 years ago.
