This upcoming Xbox RPG promises that your in-game decisions will impact not just the narrative, but also the combat encounters. Avowed features a “flexible class system” where the AI adapts to your actions.
Obsidian Entertainment is gearing up to enthrall RPG fans with Avowed. While the release of the new Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been postponed to avoid the crowded February launch window, the American studio’s RPG remains steadfast, aiming to showcase a unique world based on the Pillars of Eternity universe. As the release approaches, the developers have been quick to share more insights about the game and how player choices will shape both the story and the combat.
As detailed in an extensive interview with Obsidian on Xbox Wire, Avowed’s combat is built upon an open class system, allowing players to freely craft their own playstyles. According to Senior Combat Designer Max Matzenbacher, “players can mix and match abilities from any skill tree and equip weapons in unique configurations.” Ranging from rifles to magical grimoires, the RPG’s arsenal encourages experimentation and creativity, which in turn affects the game world.
The world of Avowed is designed to reward exploration and curiosity. With mechanics like weapon enchantments, passive abilities, and upgrade systems, players will be able to optimize their loadouts according to their preferred playstyle. Game Director Gabe Paramo emphasized the importance of freedom in all aspects: “The attribute system isn’t restricted by classes, allowing players to adapt to their preferences without limitations.”
Intelligent AI Adapts to Player Choices in Battle
Beyond its combat system, Avowed aims to impress with its AI, which reacts to the player’s actions and utilizes the environment to its advantage. Enemies will adjust their tactics, whether it’s scaling cliffs or using ranged weapons, adding an extra layer of challenge and realism to the fights. This interplay between the player, enemies, and the environment ensures engaging encounters in every corner of the Living Lands.
With its focus on player choice, a hallmark of the studio’s previous work, and an immersive, albeit not open, world, Avowed is shaping up to be a major contender in 2025. Available on Game Pass from its launch, the only remaining question is whether the studio’s first major fantasy game since 2019 will live up to its promises.
