Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ), the annual charity speedrun event, has a few surprises in store this year.
AGDQ has featured some pretty absurdly fast playthroughs in the past week. We’ve seen an Elden Ring boss fight collection with a saxophone controller, and a Crazy Taxi speedrun with a live band. In comparison, Fallout saw a slightly different endgame from Tomatoangus (who also goes by Tomatoanus, but maybe the second half of his name forced him to add an extra G).
He sped through Fallout: New Vegas by forming romantic relationships with everyone. There are twelve such characters, and it would normally be impossible to “bed” them all in a single playthrough. The NPCs have predefined sexualities, and we have no way of changing the gender of our characters during a playthrough. However, the quick save and quick load before finalizing our character means that the pop-up window will always pop up during the game, so we can change our character as we play.
Quick loading is common because it allows you to skip dialogs and “catapult”. The glitch in the revolver reload animation also provides such quick dashes, and if you jump in the middle, you can repeat this move indefinitely. If you go outside the game’s boundaries, you will respawn at the entrance to the place where you started your out-of-bounds run. Another big trick is the time freeze that can be activated by right-clicking on the Pip Boy’s map. For some reason, this freezes the AI, allowing us to complete our mission tasks relatively safely (e.g. picking up the monster eggs needed to impress one of our partners).
In 2020, the same person did the Fallout Anthology speedrun when he played through the Fallout 1-2-3-New Vegas 4 quintet in 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 21 seconds… but in comparison, 17:25 isn’t that long. It fits into a lunch break as he kills all 12 characters.
