Has Sony Given Up on LittleBigPlanet?

A very sneaky change to the PlayStation Productions intro may not be obvious at first glance, but look closer and you can see the difference.

PlayStation has removed Sackboy, the beloved mascot of the popular platforming series, from its cinematic intros, prompting some fans to worry about the future of LittleBigPlanet. On Twitter, user Radec noticed that Sackboy was missing from the PlayStation Productions intro for the latest Until Dawn movie, despite still being present in the 2023 Gran Turismo intro.

Each PlayStation Studios intro for PS5 games is tailored to the specific title, usually featuring characters from its own franchise. However, PlayStation Productions intros have always highlighted iconic characters from first-party games, seemingly emphasizing their brand significance. So it’s not surprising that fans interpret Sackboy’s removal as a snub to LittleBigPlanet.

LittleBigPlanet seems to be losing importance for Sony, especially as Astro Bot, another platformer, has swept several awards recently—including Game of the Year—and is now more prominently featured as the PlayStation mascot at events.

Last year, Sony indefinitely shut down LittleBigPlanet 3‘s online servers, months after claiming the game was “temporarily” disabled due to technical issues. Later, it announced that both LittleBigPlanet 3 and its DLC would be removed from the PlayStation Store. At the time, Sony-owned Media Molecule said:

“LittleBigPlanet shaped us as a studio and remains an important part of who we are today. We’ll forever be grateful for it and the incredible community it inspired.”

Based in Guildford, Media Molecule has seen major restructuring in recent years, resulting in an unspecified number of layoffs. Support also ended for their latest game, Dreams. The studio is now developing a new IP, led by John Beech, who was promoted to creative director in 2023 following the departure of studio co-founder Mark Healey earlier that year.
