Cyberpunk 2: CD Projekt Red Celebrates as the Sequel Enters Pre-Production

Good news about the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel! CD Projekt Red has confirmed that its sci-fi RPG has taken a new step in development. The developers have announced that Project Orion, now officially referred to as ‘Cyberpunk 2’, has entered pre-production.

CD Projekt RED has several major projects in the pipeline. The Polish team has already confirmed the existence of The Witcher IV, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, and other projects like Project Hadar and Project Sirius. Although we already have a trailer for their next medieval fantasy RPG, we still don’t know much about the new sci-fi adventure beyond hints about a second city apart from Night City. Now, in a community update, the creators have shared that the project, internally known as Project Orion, has officially entered the pre-production phase.

Cyberpunk 2 enters pre-production, but the road is still long

The company shared this news in its Q1 2025 financial report and in a post on X. However, this doesn’t mean the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is coming soon. The pre-production stage can last several years and involves testing ideas, planning future tasks, and creating early prototypes to evaluate their fun and functionality. This is just the start of development, not the final phase.

Interestingly, CD Projekt RED has stopped referring to the project as Project Orion and is instead calling it ‘Cyberpunk 2’. It’s possible that the team will change the name again in the future, perhaps with a different year than 2077. For now, we can only wait for further updates on the full title and features of the game.

The Witcher IV takes center stage, but Cyberpunk 2 is expanding

One thing we do know is that most of CD Projekt RED’s developers are currently focused on The Witcher IV. According to a team presentation, 422 out of 730 employees are assigned to the fantasy RPG. Meanwhile, 96 people are working on Cyberpunk 2, a number expected to grow as the project advances.

In addition, CD Projekt RED shared that Phantom Liberty, the major expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, has sold 10 million copies since its release in September 2023. “Espionage is a high-stakes game that 10 million of you have encountered upon entering Dogtown. To all our Vs, thanks for joining us on this journey. Keep tearing it up in the Majors, chooms!”
