The God of War co-creator and director of the 2018 Norse reboot is certainly at work on something, but the details remain as murky as ever.
Cory Barlog has been working on a new project at Sony Santa Monica for some time now, but concrete details remain scarce. PlayStation has stayed remarkably tight-lipped about the studio’s next game, though a trickle of fresh information recently emerged about the project’s progress. On the ResetEra forum, Bloomberg editor Jason Schreier shared what he knows: according to him, this is set to be Sony Santa Monica’s next major release, and when he last heard about it a month or two ago, development was proceeding smoothly—there were no signs of trouble behind the scenes.
It was Schreier’s next remarks that got gamers speculating about what exactly the project is. The dominant rumor had been that the studio’s upcoming blockbuster would be an all-new IP—a huge deal, given the developer’s entire legacy is built on God of War titles. As Schreier’s comments made the rounds on social media and fans began to get excited about a fresh IP, Schreier himself jumped in to ask why everyone was assuming Barlog’s game is actually something brand new.
Under pressure from the growing buzz, Schreier clarified: it’s not a new IP per se, but it may feel like one, which could explain the confusion. He then politely asked everyone to stop prodding for more information, saying he’d prefer to reveal additional details through Bloomberg if and when he’s able. It’s also worth noting that he shot down earlier speculation about the project’s direction, specifically denying that it’s a sci-fi game.
Another major rumor making the rounds is that the studio is developing a 2.5D Metroidvania-style God of War title—something that was already reported earlier this year.
