A Dune: Awakening Player Does the Unthinkable—And the Whole Community Calls Him Out

One Dune: Awakening player managed to accomplish what most can only dream of, and the community wasted no time calling him out. Just 0.1% of all players have unlocked this achievement, with only two other trophies in the game coming close to such rarity.

Surviving on Arrakis is no easy feat, but even in the most desperate situations, some Dune: Awakening players refuse to cross certain boundaries just to live another day. That’s clear from how the community reacted to one fan who is now among the very first in the world to complete the “Messiah Divided” achievement—an unlock that only 0.1% of all players have pulled off so far. As a “reward,” he’s already been called a monster by fellow players. But what’s behind this fierce response?

In the world of Dune, there are tiny desert mice called Muid’Dib—also the name the Fremen gave Paul Atreides—and just seeing one is a challenge. The “Messiah Divided” achievement requires you to cook 100 dishes using these little mice as the main ingredient, a daunting task because they’re so hard to find. The creatures are usually drawn to spice and sandy fields, but to catch them, you’ll have to be careful not to scare away the sandworms.

Of course, finding that many mice is tough enough on its own, but for many players, it’s the moral line that matters. “You’re a monster”, one Dune Awakening fan told him—an accusation that drew plenty of support. “You kill mice! You must be a Harkonnen”, added another MMO player. “I would never do that”, insisted another survivor. Plenty flat-out reject the idea of killing the little creatures. “I see them in the sand all the time and I know you can collect them, but I never would”, one fan remarked.

Most of the comments, though, focus on how insanely rare the mice are. As Mein-MMO points out, “What’s the trick to collecting mice? I think I’ve seen two in about 60 hours of play,” one player lamented. “I’ve played 100 hours and never even seen the cooking option,” added another. “0.1% out of over a million copies sold isn’t just one person. But you’re still in an elite group,” another fan concluded.

The only achievements with a comparable level of difficulty in Dune: Awakening are “Extraction,” which requires collecting 10,000 units of every resource with a handheld mining tool, and “Master of Assassins,” which challenges players to eliminate 500 rival house soldiers. These are the kinds of brutal tasks you’d expect from a game that set out to test its players’ survival instincts truly.
