Son of Thanjai: A Journey to 11th Century India! [VIDEO]

It’s rare to see a promising Indian game, especially one set in a period rarely explored in our part of the world.

Son of Thanjai is a cinematic, action-adventure epic set in culturally rich 11th-century South India. Playing as a Chola king burdened by his legacy, you must embark on a personal journey that blurs the line between duty and destiny. Thanjavur is no longer the empire you left behind. Whispers of unrest echo through its temples and streets. Allies seem uncertain, enemies hide in plain sight, and foreign saboteurs inch closer to your throne. As a king born in the shadow of his father’s greatness, you must carve your own path while treading the fine line between duty and destiny. Crush your enemies, protect your people, and immerse yourself in 11th-century South India in this cinematic, action-adventure epic.

Mount horses, elephants, and bulls—or blend into the crowd—as you hunt your targets through the vibrant city of Thanjai and its outskirts. Master the Surulvaal, a deadly whip-sword where every swing is a spectacle and every strike is personal. Engage in fluid, high-stakes melee combat inspired by Kalarippayattu, an ancient martial art. Chain attacks and execute visceral finishers with elegance. Disarm enemies with a variety of period-inspired weapons. Infiltrate enemy camps and interrogate key targets to unlock crucial intel. You control the battlefield.

The world of Thanjai is a meticulously researched and richly detailed recreation of the Chola Empire at its peak. It is a place alive with culture, music, and meaning. Stroll through Thanjavur’s streets, where soaring temples and whispering walls bear witness to the past. Witness folk performances, classical dances, and ceremonies rooted in ancient Tamil traditions. Engage with ordinary people—priests, farmers, merchants, and fishermen—each of whom will respond differently depending on how you present yourself. Uncover hidden lore that reflects your past and challenges your beliefs.

Son of Thanjai is being developed for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, but the Indian studio Ayelet has not yet announced a release date.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
