Gears of War Is Back – Netflix Is Officially Making the Movie with a Dune Screenwriter

MOVIE NEWS – After years of silence, Netflix has finally begun developing the Gears of War movie, with Dune and Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts working on the script. With two new games in the pipeline, the film aims to ride the franchise’s resurgence and possibly launch around the series’ 20th anniversary in 2026. Xbox’s media expansion doesn’t stop here – Fallout and Wolfenstein adaptations are also moving forward.

The return of Gears of War is a major event for fans of action and science fiction. The remaster of the first game, Gears of War: Reloaded, arrives in a few days, now also making its debut on PlayStation 5. But fans are already looking ahead to 2026 and the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel that revisits the chaotic Emergence Day storyline.

There’s also excitement around the long-awaited Netflix movie adaptation – and now we finally have some positive updates. Netflix and Xbox Game Studios have teamed up on the film, which is currently in the writing phase. The script is being penned by Jon Spaihts, best known for Dune and Prometheus, with David Leitch (Deadpool 2, Bullet Train) directing.

Although the project was announced some time ago, we’re now hearing directly from the producers. “We’re writing the script right now with Jon Spaihts, and we’re very excited,” said producer Kelly McCormick in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The Coalition, the studio behind the games, is also involved, ensuring the film stays true to the source material. Netflix plans to launch the movie during a key moment for Xbox – ideally around the release of E-Day and Gears’ 20th anniversary in 2026. While the film likely won’t launch simultaneously with the game, the teams hope both will benefit from shared momentum.

Let’s not forget that Netflix also announced an animated Gears of War series in the past, although there’s been no update since.

And Gears isn’t the only Xbox franchise heading to screens. The second season of Fallout is set to premiere on Prime Video this December, taking fans to New Vegas, and a trailer is already out. The same production team is also working on a Wolfenstein series – little is known, but fans are already debating who should portray BJ Blazkowicz.
