Paramount Eyes Call of Duty as Its Next Blockbuster Franchise

MOVIE NEWS – Michael Bay, get ready: Mission: Impossible brought in billions, and now Call of Duty may be the next big thing. Paramount Pictures, home of Transformers and Sonic, is negotiating with Activision Blizzard.

Video game adaptations have long tempted Hollywood. While interest faded somewhat in the last decade, back in the early 2000s nearly every major franchise had a chance of making it to theaters — and Call of Duty was no exception. Over time, hopes of seeing Soap or Captain Price on the big screen dwindled, but now reports indicate that Paramount Pictures is in talks with Activision Blizzard to bring the multibillion-dollar saga to cinemas.

According to Matthew Belloni (Puck), negotiations are underway between Activision and the producers of Mission: Impossible for a potential Call of Duty adaptation. No specifics are known yet — whether it would adapt an existing sub-series or present a completely original story — but having Paramount onboard could be the key to finally making it happen.

Paramount has a proven track record with billion-dollar franchises, including one rooted in gaming: Sonic the Hedgehog. Its live-action trilogy has grossed $1.197 billion worldwide, not counting merchandising, spin-offs, or streaming tie-ins like Knuckles. With Mission: Impossible wrapping up in 2025, it makes sense that the studio is searching for its next long-term tentpole.

A shelved project may return

Of course, this isn’t the first time a Call of Duty movie has been floated. For years, rumors and executive comments have suggested Activision considered a cinematic universe. In 2020, a project led by Stefano Sollima (Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado) was shelved because Activision Blizzard no longer saw it as “a business priority.” It’s unclear whether Paramount would revive that version or start from scratch with a new creative team.

If it moves forward, the adaptation would join the growing wave of video game projects making it big, from HBO’s The Last of Us to Universal’s record-breaking Super Mario Bros. Movie.
