Not an Adaptation but a Tribute: The Director Reveals Which Resident Evil Games Inspired the New Movie

MOVIE NEWS – Don’t panic: the upcoming Resident Evil film won’t be adapting any familiar plots. Instead, the director has made it crystal clear which entries in the series it will resemble. Zach Cregger admits he’s beyond excited about the project.

We’re at a fascinating point in the history of video game adaptations. After years of filmmakers treating these projects as little more than assignments and dismissing games as kids’ fads, directors who are themselves lifelong gamers are taking the reins. Jonathan Nolan realized a dream with Fallout, while Alex Garland even wrote the screenplay for an Elden Ring film before being officially approached for the job.

Now it’s Zach Cregger’s turn. The acclaimed horror filmmaker, who has logged countless hours in Dark Souls, is directing the reboot of Resident Evil. Ever since the announcement, he has had to defend his gamer credentials — especially as the movie won’t adapt a particular entry or feature recognizable characters from the franchise.

Two classic games set the tone

That doesn’t mean the film won’t echo the games. Quite the opposite: its influences are explicit. In an interview on the Double Toasted podcast, Cregger revealed that his film “probably lives more in the world of Resident Evil 2 and 3, but leans toward the tone of Resident Evil 4.” He has previously cited the fourth installment as one of his personal favorites.

This revelation won’t shock fans of his work. With Barbarian and Weapons, Cregger showed his flair for shocking twists, macabre humor, and unsettling atmospheres — all traits that feel right at home in Capcom’s universe. His unique style seems tailored to reimagine Resident Evil for the big screen.

Although story details remain under wraps, Cregger hinted heavily: “The journey you’ll have as a viewer will mirror what you go through as a player.” Structurally, it will follow a protagonist descending deeper into darkness, from point A to point B. “Having played thousands of hours of these games, I understand how their pacing works — and it’s inherently cinematic.”

Production details are scarce, but we know that shooting began last August in Prague and that Austin Abrams — who also starred in Weapons — will play the lead role.
