Star Wars: Lucasfilm Is Working on Unusual Projects According to Tony Gilroy

MOVIE NEWS – If you’re looking for a different kind of Star Wars experience, Lucasfilm is developing “truly unusual” projects. Tony Gilroy confirmed that Lucasfilm will explore new corners of the galaxy with standalone stories.

After his acclaimed run as showrunner of Andor, Tony Gilroy shared a vision of Star Wars’ future that has fans excited. Speaking recently on The Ringer-Verse podcast, he revealed that Lucasfilm is working on “really unusual” projects and encouraged creators to explore uncharted corners of the galaxy. “There are a lot of corners of Star Wars that remain unexplored,” he said, emphasizing that new stories don’t have to revolve around familiar characters and timelines.

The success of Andor, blending political thriller and spy drama in a galactic setting, proved that compelling narratives don’t need to rely on the saga’s biggest names. The Diego Luna-led series earned 14 Emmy nominations (winning 4 already) and saw a major surge in viewership in its second season.

Andor was no accident. Cassian Andor’s story highlighted how ordinary people can influence the Rebellion, moving away from predestined heroes and epic lightsaber duels. This grounded approach demonstrated that creative independence can thrive while still respecting canon.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy reinforced this approach, stating that the franchise’s future will lean toward more independent, auteur-driven projects capable of “branching out into many other stories.” The aim is to broaden storytelling possibilities, inviting filmmakers who can bring fresh perspectives without tying every project to the Skywalker legacy.

New Horizons: Starfighter and The Mandalorian & Grogu

Among the projects reflecting this philosophy is Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling. It will be the first major Star Wars film without direct ties to previous movies or series. Its development perfectly illustrates Gilroy’s and Lucasfilm’s vision: keeping the saga alive with fresh stories and characters.

Meanwhile, The Mandalorian & Grogu, slated for May 2026, will bring two of the Disney+ era’s most beloved characters to theaters, blending nostalgia with innovation. These projects confirm Lucasfilm has absorbed the lessons of Andor’s success: fans value unique stories that can surprise and expand the Star Wars universe.

The Galaxy Still Holds Secrets

Lucasfilm seems determined to explore the stranger corners of its galaxy. As Gilroy put it: “Let your weird flag fly and do what you do best.” The combination of creative freedom, respect for canon, and commitment to fresh narratives promises an exciting future for Star Wars, where audiences can expect to be surprised and moved beyond the Skywalker saga.

With Andor as the benchmark, the franchise proves that evolving doesn’t mean losing its identity—it means finding new ways to tell meaningful stories that resonate with audiences of all ages. Don’t forget: both seasons of Andor, along with the rest of the Star Wars shows and films, are available on Disney+.
