Surviving Mars: Relaunched: Martian City Building Gets a New Political System

Haemimont Games wants to do more than just give the game a graphical overhaul, which will, of course, include all DLCs.

Surviving Mars: Relaunched offers more than a standard visual facelift. Like most similar projects, the goal is to improve the game’s technical aspects and update the user interface. However, it also introduces a new political system to the Martian colony. Haemimont Games outlined the political system on Steam. Interestingly, political activity begins not on Mars, but on Earth. While the colony is small, an Earth-based council largely makes political decisions and meets every few years to vote on new laws affecting the colony’s future. Haemimont used the abolition of rocket speed regulations as an example. This would presumably speed up the delivery of resources to Mars, but it would also increase the risk of new craters forming on the planet.

As the colony grows, we can establish our own government by setting up a Martian assembly. At that point, the Earth council will dissolve, and we will choose our form of government: theocracy, liberal democracy, or anarchist communism. The chosen form of government determines the role of the assembly and how political opponents are treated (tolerated, prohibited, or exiled). The form of government also affects the factions that appear in the assembly. There are more than a dozen factions in total, but only a few appear in a given game. They can evolve, become radicalized, and even split apart as the colony develops. Our goal is to achieve complete independence for Mars from Earth and the private sponsor who financed our initial mission.

Surviving Mars: Relaunched includes all DLCs introduced since the original release of Surviving Mars, including terraforming, animal husbandry, and rival colonies. Haemimont’s plans for Relaunched extend beyond the release itself. Future updates will expand food production systems and enable the colonization of Mars by robots.

Surviving Mars: Relaunched is set to release on November 10 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
