MOVIE NEWS – Three years ago, M3GAN burst onto the scene and managed to refresh the killer doll subgenre.

The twist was that the titular robot doll was not possessed by a demon. Instead, an AI took control so it could carry out the grisly acts the genre demands. The film’s success also came from expertly delivered memeable moments, such as M3GAN’s bizarre dance, which built a loyal fan base well before release.

Working within Blumhouse’s tried and true business model, M3GAN did a lot with a little. By comparison, the sequel disappointed some. Critics argued that M3GAN 2.0 leaned too hard into gags and crammed in too much action, while the formula no longer felt new.

From the first film’s breakout, it was clear that beyond a sequel a spin-off would also arrive, keeping the core idea while steering into new territory. SOULM8TE openly borrows a touch of inspiration from Fatal Attraction. Its protagonist is an intelligent sex robot that refuses to remain a mere accessory. With a self-improving “soul,” it behaves like a jealous lover. The creators expect a big hit, saying the subject aims higher, trying to reach older viewers alongside younger audiences. No public trailer exists yet, though footage screened months ago at CinemaCon, so only insiders have a sense of what this robot lover can do.
