Coven of the Chicken Foo: This New Bruce Straley Game Turns Fantasy Heroics Upside Down, Without Trying to Be One

Wildflower Interactive has revealed Coven of the Chicken Foot, a puzzle platformer adventure for PC that looks more interested in aftermath than applause. Instead of chasing heroic glory, the game centers on an elderly witch, an odd companion, and a world that has already been “saved” once.

Wildflower Interactive, the studio founded in 2022 by Bruce Straley, has announced Coven of the Chicken Foot, a puzzle platformer adventure game coming to PC via Steam. A release date was not announced.

“Wildflower Interactive is built on the notion of pushing myself creatively and working with like-minded creative people, driven by a strong desire to continue the conversation about what kind of experiences video games can deliver,” said Wildflower Interactive founder Bruce Straley in a press release. “We’re doing that with Coven of the Chicken Foot. It nods at the fun and simplicity of old school games, while also evolving the pairing of storytelling and interactivity in a new, challenging way. I’m very proud of what we’ve built at Wildflower and can’t wait for people to explore the world we’re creating and get to know our lovable duo.”

The premise starts after the classic quest is already over. The dungeons have been plundered, the monsters are long gone, and the heroes have moved on. That is when Gertie, an elderly witch, finally gets to work. She has been waiting for her chance to prove herself to the coven, and after pledging to counter the so-called “heroes” and their unchecked pride, she sets out with the help of an unusual creature.

Coven of the Chicken Foot is described as a quirky, emotionally rich, creature-focused puzzle platformer set in a stylized world that knowingly plays with traditional fantasy-adventure tropes. As Gertie, players venture into dark dungeons, lush forests, catacombs of fallen heroes, and mucky bogs that kill all those that dare enter. Gertie is not built like a typical action hero. She will not be swinging swords or double-jumping past danger, and survival depends on learning how to work with her peculiar companion.

That companion is designed to learn and adapt from its witchy partner, gradually revealing an independent streak and motivations of its own. Wildflower says it has built a responsive, evolving non-playable ally that changes its abilities and behavior throughout the player’s journey.

With a semi-open world, systems-rich design, and thoughtful environmental storytelling, the game aims to reward curiosity and let players piece things together without heavy-handed exposition. The story is delivered through the relationship between Gertie and the creature, with the bond growing alongside the player’s understanding of the world.
