Nioh 3: A Taste of the Sengoku Period [VIDEO]

Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo have released a 17.5-minute gameplay video from the upcoming Nioh 3. The footage focuses on the Sengoku period while offering a detailed look at the game’s more open environments and new combat systems. The showcase is particularly notable as a playable demo is also set to arrive before launch.

The game spans several historical eras, including the early Edo period, the Sengoku era, the Heian period, and the Bakumatsu era. The newly released footage begins in the second era, also known as the Warring States period. During this time, Yōkai roam freely across the land, and a terrifying realm known as the Crucible has emerged. Players explore a large open area while searching for the path that leads toward the Crucible.

The protagonist, the historical figure Tokugawa Takechiyo, later known as Iemitsu, can switch freely between the traditional samurai style and a new ninja style at any point during combat. This flexibility is especially useful when adapting to specific enemies or situations, or simply when switching to a preferred playstyle. In samurai mode, Tokugawa confronts enemies head-on, using martial techniques, blocking attacks, and striking through different stances. In ninja mode, players rely on ninjutsu to outmaneuver foes, using aerial movement and back attacks.

Not everything and everyone in Nioh 3 is hostile. Team Ninja emphasized that Tokugawa will encounter friendly characters and even helpful Yōkai throughout his journey, with interactions that can provide valuable rewards. Tokugawa’s path ultimately leads into the Crucible, a highly dangerous area dominated by hostile Yōkai, where players can expect significantly tougher battles. The heroes who summoned the Crucible have lost their way, giving in to their own ambitions and misguided goals.

The video then transitions to the Heian period, where the land is completely frozen. As in the other eras, the protagonist must purify the Crucible to restore the world and cleanse it of Yōkai corruption.

Nioh 3 launches on February 6 for PlayStation 5 and PC. A playable demo will arrive on January 29, with progress transferable to the full game, effectively providing early access to its opening section.
