Screaming Villains is bringing boxing to three platforms, but this isn’t the kind of “trendy” modern release you see every week. Prize Fighter: Heavyweight Edition is an FMV throwback, rebuilt and re-presented for 2026.
Originally developed by Digital Pictures, Prize Fighter is back – and Prize Fighter: Heavyweight Edition promises to put you closer than a ringside seat by dropping you straight into the fight. In this remastered classic, you’re the one trading shots with some of the world’s toughest boxers, with your fists always in view and ready to fire off whatever you want, whenever you want.
A jab. A hook. An uppercut. Land something clean and watch your opponent wobble, then brace for the reversal: when you take a hit, your vision smears, and you can end up staring at the referee and your trainer looming above you while the count starts. Or you can be the one still standing, collecting the heavyweight crown.
The main event comes with a full entourage: trainer, cornermen, and the bucket boy are there to steer you, support you, and bark advice. Around them you’ve got the referee, card girls, the announcer, assorted hecklers, and four opponents designed to be as beefy, brutal, and ugly as possible.
Prize Fighter leans hard into a gritty, grounded vibe. The bouts were staged by Ron Stein, the boxing guru known for choreographing fight sequences in Raging Bull and the Rocky films, while close-ups, POV angles, and handheld-style camera work aim to push the intensity right into your face.
The game has been rebuilt from the ground up, upgraded with 4K video, and expanded with a stack of improvements and new features. The pitch is simple: glove up for tonight’s headline bout – beat three hard contenders to earn your shot at the champion.
FMV boxing sounds odd today, but in the 1990s it was a real thing, back when the market was packed with full-motion-video titles. Think Night Trap and Phantasmagoria, and if you want to go further back, even Dragon’s Lair sits in that lineage. Prize Fighter: Heavyweight Edition launches on February 20 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC.
