Batman: Arkham Origins: Since There’s No Remaster, a Mod Can Fill the Gap! [VIDEO]

This mod makes the 2013 game, developed by WB Games Montréal instead of Rocksteady, look good enough to pass as an unofficial remaster.

Batman: Arkham Origins certainly scratched the itch for players who wanted more Arkham, but the combat never felt quite as sharp, and even though Gotham was being battered by a blizzard during the story, the game never really sold the idea of a city buried under snow. The Arkham Origins Advanced Graphics mod, recently updated to version 2.0, aims to fix exactly that. For starters, there is simply more snow – more particles, larger particles, and deeper deformation. The lighting has also been reworked to create a colder, more wintry mood and to land somewhere between the visuals shown in the E3 trailer and what shipped in the final game.

Textures have also been upgraded, with some assets borrowed from elsewhere. Gotham’s skyline has been replaced with the higher-resolution version from Batman: Arkham Knight, while Batman’s default suit now uses a higher-res version that had previously been locked to multiplayer for some reason. Batman’s cape has been improved as well, looking smoother and shinier than before. Shadow banding has been toned down, which means fewer of those strange circular shadows on thugs’ heads that made them look like medieval monks. Shadow edges are less fuzzy overall, and reflections have received a major upgrade too.

The one area left untouched is the cutscenes. They are stored in .usm format and remain capped at 720p. The modders have not yet found a way to modify or upscale them, though that could still happen later. Installing the Arkham Origins Advanced Graphics mod is not especially complicated. You download it from Nexus Mods, extract the files, and copy them into the game’s installation directory. Because of a quirk in Batman: Arkham Origins’ configuration setup, you also need to have at least one DLC installed.
