A new interview has put the closing chapter of the trilogy back in the spotlight, and there is no doubt that it will be a major undertaking for Square Enix.
Although more information about the third part of Final Fantasy VII Remake is reportedly coming soon, the game itself is still nowhere to be seen. It did not appear at State of Play, but judging by director Naoki Hamaguchi’s latest comments, that absence is very likely connected to an expected simultaneous multiplatform release. Hamaguchi understands how important it is for modern players to experience the same excitement at the same time, and the developers are taking this very seriously, planning to present their final decision on a simultaneous multiplatform launch in a way that meets fans’ expectations.
Although Hamaguchi did not give a direct answer about the possibility of a simultaneous multiplatform release, other details from the interview suggest that this will indeed be the case, since the Japanese developers have already been able to embrace a multiplatform development process. The director then sent a message to everyone eagerly awaiting the final part of the remake trilogy.
“We cannot yet provide specific details regarding the release timing. However, while developing this multiplatform title, we clearly felt that users want to experience the excitement at the same time. We are seriously considering how best to develop the third title for multiple platforms, taking both fan expectations and business considerations into account. To be honest, the development process itself has changed significantly. Previously, the general approach was to complete the game on one platform first, then consider porting it later. Square Enix largely followed that approach as well. However, through FFVII Remake and FFVII Rebirth, I strongly felt that this way of thinking is no longer viable today. Rendering, streaming, memory planning, and asset configuration all need to be designed with multiple environments in mind from the beginning. In other words, the era of the porting team working hard later is over.
Nowadays, the question of which platform it releases on is far less important than how much enthusiasm you can throw yourself into the game with. We are keeping that perspective in mind for our trilogy as well. The era in which AAA games were limited to only a few selected environments is rapidly changing. That is why we absolutely will not leave the third part in an unfinished state. I want to bring it to a point where I can proudly say that I completed the Final Fantasy VII Remake series all the way to the end. That is the determination with which we are currently developing the game. Please look forward to it!” – Hamaguchi said in a new interview with Famitsu.
If the third part of Final Fantasy VII Remake really does launch on multiple platforms at release, then Summer Game Fest would be the perfect opportunity for a proper announcement. Hopefully, we will finally get our first look at Highwind gameplay that redefines the scale of the series, at Cid and Vincent in combat, or perhaps even at Chadley returning in a major role.
