Only One Day for Sex in New York

MOVIE NEWS – Writer-director Will Gluck is continuing his efforts to breathe new life into the romantic comedy.

Following his earlier success, Anyone But You, One Night Only will soon arrive, placing two hearts in search of love in unusual circumstances. The story takes place in an alternative New York where premarital sex is permitted on only one night each year. Although the concept could easily turn into a bleak dystopia like The Purge, Gluck takes a much lighter but no less thought-provoking approach. He uses the bizarre premise to hold up a distorted mirror to modern alienation, the startling world of online dating, and the obstacles that now stand in the way of people searching for love.

In an interview with The AU Review, the director revealed that although the film is an unmistakable romantic comedy, it also offers a critical portrait of our everyday reality without forcing that message directly upon the audience. As the lovers struggle to find happiness, the signs hidden in the background, the behavior of supporting characters, and seemingly incidental lines of dialogue all speak about the imperfect but perhaps repairable world in which we are forced to live.

The story centers on two strangers, Allie (Monica Barbaro) and Owen (Callum Turner), whose paths cross again and again during this chaotic night filled with possibilities, when everyone is free to act. Allie longs for a genuine, deeply romantic relationship, while Owen is trying to recover from a previous heartbreak. Finding their way toward each other in a city pulsing around them with repressed desire and unrestrained energy will not be easy, but neither will it be impossible.

Gluck wanted to create a film that would not merely entertain audiences but also make them think and continue debating it for hours afterward. The director sincerely hopes that one of its central messages will come through: the restrictions are severe and the clock is ticking mercilessly, yet no system imposed upon us can suppress the desire for sincerely experienced human connection.
