A Modder Has Combined the Entire PS2 Grand Theft Auto Trilogy into One Game! [VIDEO]

While we wait for Grand Theft Auto VI, modders have been keeping busy with earlier entries in the franchise.

While Grove Street Games struggled with Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, a modder condensed the entire PlayStation 2 trilogy into a single game. This project quickly became one of the most interesting in the series. Dryxio used the open-source, reverse-engineered re3 and reVC engines as a foundation. They managed to run the engines live within the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas PC process. This essentially created a “GTA-inception,” as all three games are playable while the others are running.

Players can seamlessly switch between controlling CJ, Claude, and Tommy. Each game retains its own engine instance, game logic, mission progress, settings, and save files while the host world continues to be simulated in real time. If the modder could get the first two games in the series to run in the same way, this project would be one of the most remarkable modding projects of all time.

The way this project works is reminiscent of the Shenmue and Like a Dragon (formerly Yakuza) series, in which players can play classic SEGA arcade games by interacting with certain elements in the game world, such as arcade machines and consoles. Considering that Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to be one of the most advanced open-world games to date, it wouldn’t be impossible for Rockstar Games to implement similar features and allow users to access the entire series’ content through the game. However, given that the game will be heavily monetized, we shouldn’t expect such a feature to be free.

Nevertheless, if the game is eventually released on PC as well—since the November 19 release is for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series only, and a PC port hasn’t been announced—and it turns out to be moddable, some modders would certainly take on the challenge if Rockstar Games didn’t provide this option.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
