Christopher Nolan has just completed one of the most important blockbusters of his career. The Odyssey is now playing in theaters worldwide, social media has been flooded with reactions from viewers, and the director can finally devote some time to interviews that go beyond simply answering questions about the film. Since he is one of the most influential figures in the entire entertainment industry, many people want to hear his perspective on subjects that are not directly connected to filmmaking. One of his recent conversations addressed the arrival of generative artificial intelligence, a technology the director described as “a Trojan horse where everyone knows the Greeks are hiding inside.”

Nolan discussed his views on generative artificial intelligence in greater detail during a conversation with Hugo Travers on the HugoDécrypte – Grands formats YouTube channel. “I think AI is a Trojan horse, and everyone knows the Greeks are inside,” Nolan began. “I think it’s truly fascinating to see how, in recent years, it has, in a way, taken over Wall Street and the worlds of business and investment. I’ve never seen a technology advance so rapidly and be so rejected by the public.” Nolan has observed user reactions to products made with generative AI and is fully aware of the broader public opinion surrounding the technology. From his perspective, society is right to approach artificial intelligence tools with a certain degree of suspicion.

“Everyone’s suspicion is extreme, particularly among young people,” he continued. “The reactions to online videos made with AI – kids my children’s age immediately call it ‘AI slop,’ they’ve coined that term. Which I think is a very healthy skepticism, because technology will always give us great gifts, but it has to be viewed with skepticism. The motives of the people giving it to us also have to be viewed with skepticism. That’s how we’ll get the best out of a new technology, instead of blindly believing that everything is going to be great. It’s quite heartening to see that people, young people in particular, are so skeptical.” Returning to the story that inspired The Odyssey, Nolan described generative artificial intelligence as “a transparent horse. It’s made of glass. Everyone can see what’s going on inside.”

Meanwhile, The Odyssey continues to attract audiences to theaters, and many viewers are leaving with highly positive impressions. Nolan’s film is already being regarded as a critical success, having achieved a 95 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes alongside a 97 percent audience score. The journey has only just begun, however, as The Odyssey has only just completed its opening weekend and audiences still have plenty of time to experience it on the big screen.
