There is one title in the franchise that not many people discuss. It may be getting a modernized version through an unexpected release.
On Twitter, Anomino wrote that there’s a good chance the 2009 Wolfenstein remaster will be announced and released at this year’s QuakeCon. He checked SteamDB and saw that the original release date had been removed and that the game is now listed as Steam Deck verified. The developers may be making these changes behind the scenes because 2009’s Wolfenstein is currently unavailable for purchase on any digital platform. Otherwise, a 17-year-old game certainly wouldn’t receive such a designation from Valve, even if it were playable on Gabe Newell’s handheld PC.
Wolfenstein (2009) is likely getting remastered and shadow dropping at this years Quakecon. It has had its original release date removed and is now being listed as Steam Deck verified.
The game is currently de-listed on all digital store-fronts. https://t.co/QA58Yvrfsa pic.twitter.com/gIxgCeDUld

The 2009 Wolfenstein was published by Activision and developed by Raven Software. Both companies are now owned by Microsoft, so all rights belong to the Redmond-based tech giant. Raven Software developed this game before Activision forced the studio to focus on Call of Duty. The game was a failure in terms of sales, to put it mildly. Despite being released on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, it sold only 100,000 copies in its first month. This game, which delved into supernatural themes, was the last one that id Software oversaw as an independent studio because, by the time it was released, id Software had already been acquired by ZeniMax Media and had therefore become part of Bethesda.
Maybe the game’s reliance on supernatural elements was precisely why it wasn’t a commercial success. Maybe it was because it used the same engine, id Tech 4, as DOOM 3 and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. We don’t know. However, it appears that the remaster will be shadow-dropped, meaning it will be announced at QuakeCon and made immediately available on Steam. Of course, id Tech 4 is an older engine from 2004, so the only change may be upgrading it to the newer version used in the 2012 DOOM 3: BFG Edition…
