The success of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has demonstrated that players remain deeply attached to Edward Kenway and the franchise’s pirate era. Many fans are no longer asking for another remaster or remake, but for a full Black Flag 2 built around naval exploration, ship combat and the conflict between Assassins and Templars.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced quickly became one of the most enthusiastically received recent releases among long-time followers of the series. The remake sold more than three million copies during its first week and once again placed Edward Kenway’s transformation from ruthless pirate to committed member of the Assassin Brotherhood at the heart of the experience. Updated visuals, revised gameplay systems and additional story material encouraged a huge number of returning players to sail through the Caribbean again.

That performance also reminded audiences why the original Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is still regarded as one of the franchise’s strongest entries. A growing number of fans now want a sequel that does more than reuse the same setting, either continuing Edward’s life or returning to the Golden Age of Piracy with a new protagonist. Ezio Auditore remains the clearest example of Ubisoft allowing one popular Assassin to carry several complete games, and many players believe Edward deserves a similarly substantial continuation.

A recent ResetEra discussion focused on the possibility of Ubisoft developing Black Flag 2, with participants repeatedly calling for another game centred on piracy, open-sea exploration and naval warfare. More than 60% of the people who responded to the accompanying poll supported the idea. Several users acknowledged that Skull and Bones attempted to provide a separate pirate experience, but its story, structure and disappointing reception prevented it from becoming a genuine successor to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

Many fans argue that the Golden Age of Piracy still offers a wealth of unused locations, historical conflicts and potential characters. A new instalment could move away from Edward Kenway and follow a completely different crew, provided it preserved the freedom of sailing, ship customisation and the struggle between the Assassins and Templars. Others remain committed to Edward and would prefer to explore the missions he undertook after becoming a fully recognised member of the Brotherhood.

Another recurring suggestion is to remake and greatly expand Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry. Its story follows Adéwalé after the main events of Black Flag, and it originally launched as downloadable content before receiving a standalone release. A larger adaptation could work as a substantial companion piece or indirect follow-up, but it would not constitute a true Black Flag 2 if Edward Kenway remained outside the central role. Calls for a direct sequel also appeared regularly on Reddit and other fan communities long before Resynced became a commercial success.

The original Tech4Gamers article’s description of Assassin’s Creed Rogue requires an important correction. Rogue does not star Edward’s son, but Shay Patrick Cormac, a former Assassin who defects to the Templar Order. Edward’s son Haytham Kenway appears as a major supporting character and becomes Shay’s Templar mentor, but he is not the playable protagonist. The game takes place between the eras of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed III, brings back naval gameplay, and features Adéwalé and other returning characters, so it can reasonably be viewed as a mechanical and chronological follow-up, but it is neither Black Flag 2 nor a direct video game continuation of Edward’s story.

Edward Kenway has nevertheless received an official continuation in another medium. Ubisoft and WEBTOON’s Assassin’s Creed: Forgotten Temple follows him directly after Black Flag, sending the fully initiated Assassin on a new mission across Southeast Asia. Any future game focused on Edward would therefore need to respect that existing storyline or explore another portion of his life that the games and transmedia projects have not already covered in detail.

Ubisoft has not announced Black Flag 2 or confirmed that another pirate-focused Assassin’s Creed project is currently in development. Even so, the powerful commercial launch of Black Flag Resynced and the level of interest visible across fan communities make the demand difficult to ignore. The remaining question is whether Ubisoft would answer it by bringing Edward back, expanding Adéwalé’s story or introducing an entirely new pirate protagonist.
