MOVIE NEWS – Marvel Studios confirmed during its San Diego Comic-Con presentation in Hall H that Hayley Atwell will reprise her role as Peggy Carter in Avengers: Doomsday. The announcement carries additional significance because Chris Evans is also returning as Steve Rogers, potentially opening a new chapter in one of the MCU’s most important relationships.

Atwell personally appeared onstage during Marvel Studios’ enormous San Diego Comic-Con presentation, where her addition to the cast of Avengers: Doomsday was finally made official. Her name had not been included among the 27 performers revealed during Marvel’s March 2025 cast announcement, and the studio had also kept her away from the film’s earlier marketing campaign. Kevin Feige and directors Joe and Anthony Russo therefore preserved her return as a genuine surprise for the Hall H audience.

The confirmation became even more consequential because Comic-Con also firmly connected Evans’ comeback to Steve Rogers. At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Steve travelled into the past to live the life with Peggy that history had previously denied them, before returning as an elderly man and passing the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson. Marvel has not revealed whether Evans and Atwell will share scenes, but bringing both characters back in the same film inevitably places Steve and Peggy’s relationship under renewed scrutiny.

Peggy Carter Has Been Part of the MCU for More Than 15 Years

Atwell first portrayed British intelligence officer Peggy Carter in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, where she became one of Steve Rogers’ most important allies. The character’s popularity quickly carried her beyond that supporting role, leading to a Marvel One-Shot and a two-season television drama titled Agent Carter. Atwell later returned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man and Avengers: Endgame.

The arrival of the multiverse created an entirely different path for Peggy, who received the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve in the animated series What If…? and became Captain Carter. Atwell subsequently played a live-action version of that hero in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, appearing as a member of the Earth-838 Illuminati during their confrontation with Wanda Maximoff. That Captain Carter did not survive, but Marvel has only confirmed that Atwell is returning as Peggy Carter and has not specified whether she will portray the main-timeline character, another multiversal incarnation or several versions of Peggy.

That ambiguity fits the official premise of Avengers: Doomsday, which places heroes from three separate universes on a deadly collision course. The story will bring together the MCU’s Avengers, the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four and several characters from the earlier X-Men films in a single enormous conflict. At the centre of the threat is Victor von Doom, portrayed by former Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr.

Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter’s Returns Are More Than Simple Nostalgia

After Comic-Con, Evans revealed that he had heard at least a dozen proposals for bringing Steve Rogers back after Avengers: Endgame, but none of the earlier ideas had felt appropriate. Joe Russo’s eventual pitch and the knowledge that Downey was returning as Doctor Doom finally changed his mind. Evans stressed that he had no desire to disturb Steve’s completed story for an insignificant appearance, so his involvement suggests that the character has a meaningful purpose in the new film.

Atwell’s addition could carry similar narrative importance because Peggy is not merely Steve’s former love interest. She is an independent hero connected to the creation of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as the foundation for Captain Carter’s prominent multiversal identity. The film could continue the time-travel conclusion of Endgame, introduce a Peggy from another universe or place a version of Captain Carter inside the wider conflict, although Marvel has not confirmed any of those possibilities. Presenting Atwell as part of the main Comic-Con cast nevertheless indicates that her role may extend beyond a brief nostalgia-driven cameo.

Evans, Atwell and Downey are joined by Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu, Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer and Alan Cumming are also returning from the earlier X-Men films, while characters connected to Wakanda and the New Avengers will take part in the multiversal confrontation. Marvel has assembled one of its largest casts to date, and Peggy Carter’s personal history could provide an emotional centre for a story otherwise driven by collapsing realities and planetary-scale danger.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Doomsday will be released exclusively in cinemas on December 18, 2026. The film will lead directly into the next major chapter of the Multiverse Saga, Avengers: Secret Wars, which means Peggy’s return could produce consequences extending beyond a single adventure. Marvel has not disclosed further details about Atwell’s part, but the Comic-Con confirmation guarantees that one of the MCU’s oldest and most beloved characters will be present for the war against Doctor Doom.
