The sequel to Wo Long will take a completely different direction from its predecessor in many ways, hopefully achieving similar success.
Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember was one of many surprise announcements made during the E3 replacement period, and although the announcement video did not reveal much, it was clear from the outset that this new installment in the series would address many of the criticisms leveled at the first game. Ahead of its expected release in early 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo revealed that the new installment will feature an open world with a dynamic battlefield, addressing the monotony often found in open-world games while drawing on elements from the Ninja Gaiden series.
Producer Masakazu Hirayama confirmed that Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember will move away from the original game’s linear structure, instead introducing open-world gameplay with dynamically changing battlefield conditions. This change in gameplay will also affect the way the original game’s morale system works, although Hirayama did not provide any specific details. Given that the original game attempted to seamlessly connect linear story missions and that Team Ninja has already adopted an open-world approach to a certain extent with the open areas in Nioh 3, it is not surprising that Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember will also adopt a similar approach. Hopefully, the implementation of these mechanics will be just as successful as in Nioh 3, which far exceeded expectations. Hirayama, who also served as director of Ninja Gaiden 4, whose development coincided with that of Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember, has incorporated elements of that game into the upcoming title.
While it has not been explicitly stated, it is highly likely that the classic character-based action game series Ninja Gaiden influenced the aerial combat mechanics in Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember. While this will be a central element of the gameplay experience, it will not take center stage, as no single weapon is primarily designed for aerial combat. According to Hirayama, there will be weapon skills and tactics that can counter aerial combat, but players will still have plenty of flexibility.
“In the previous game, players needed to plant flags in various locations to boost morale in order to challenge the boss. This time, with the open-world setting, the morale system will be adjusted accordingly. Specific details cannot be revealed at this time, but we can say that the morale system still exists and will be different from before. As for the monotony of open-world exploration, this time the game basically depicts an entire battlefield. Changes on the battlefield will affect the battle’s outcome, causing changes in other parts of the scene as well. I think this will alleviate the monotony to some extent.
If I had to say whether Wo Long 2 borrowed anything from Ninja Gaiden 4, I would say it is mainly the more three-dimensional action elements, such as wall-running and scaling. We definitely utilized our years of accumulated experience in terms of movements and camera angles. We have added Phoenix Power, also known as the Concentration System, to give players more options and allow them to perform more proactive moves in addition to parrying” said Hirayama.
The Ninja Gaiden series probably influenced the decision to play down the importance of Deflection, the key mechanic that formed the foundation of the original game. This led to passive playstyles emerging in the original Wo Long. While the producer of Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember did not provide specific details, the information available paints an exciting picture of a game that many did not expect to be released. Since the original Wo Long was significantly improved after its release, it will be interesting to see how the open world, dynamic battlefield, and changes to the Deflection system build upon the original game to deliver an even better experience.
