MOVIE NEWS – Hollywood has been wrestling with a growing question: can studios still create a genuine theatrical action star at a time when more of the genre is migrating to streaming? One veteran John Wick producer believes Zendaya’s rumored next move could completely upend the industry’s current assumptions.

Hollywood has increasingly questioned whether the traditional theatrical system is still capable of turning an actor into a major action star. Recent results have offered little reassurance. Ballerina failed to become a major box-office breakout even with the strength of the John Wick brand behind it, more action projects are being pushed directly toward streaming platforms, and the number of performers who can sell an original action movie largely on their own name appears to be shrinking. Against that backdrop, it is especially notable that one of the genre’s most experienced producers believes one rumored casting decision could potentially break through those limitations.

John Wick producer Basil Iwanyk addressed the months of speculation surrounding Zendaya and the future of the Bourne franchise while appearing on The Town with Matt Belloni. His assessment was strikingly simple: if the reports are accurate and Zendaya becomes a major part of Bourne’s next chapter, then “that’s game over.” His confidence makes more sense when viewed against Zendaya’s extraordinary 2026. She played a central role in the hugely successful Spider-Man: Brand New Day, portrayed Athena in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which became the filmmaker’s highest-grossing movie, and still has Dune: Part Three scheduled to arrive in December.

Hollywood Is Watching Closely to See What Zendaya Does Next

After a run like that, Zendaya’s next major career move has quietly become one of Hollywood’s more fascinating unanswered questions. The possibility mentioned most frequently in recent months involves Universal’s amnesiac superspy franchise, which the studio has been attempting to revive for much of the last decade. The five Bourne movies have earned approximately $1.6 billion worldwide, yet the series has not produced another installment since 2016’s Jason Bourne. Universal announced a new project with Edward Berger attached to direct back in 2023, but development has progressed relatively slowly.

Matt Damon has nevertheless spent this summer’s promotional campaign for The Odyssey insisting that the project remains alive. During a July appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Damon revealed that Berger had sent him material covering roughly the first act and said he thought it was very good, leaving him optimistic that the film could still happen. Running alongside those comments has been reporting from Jeff Sneider that Zendaya held discussions with Universal about taking a leading position in the franchise, followed later by claims that Damon and Zendaya could appear together. Universal has denied those reports, so none of it should currently be treated as confirmed, but the speculation has grown significant enough that prominent people within the industry are now being asked about it directly.

Belloni and Iwanyk originally reached the subject while discussing Hollywood’s retreat from original theatrical action films. Their conversation eventually turned to Ballerina, the John Wick spin-off Iwanyk produced, which stopped at roughly $132 million worldwide despite receiving reasonably solid reviews. Some within the industry apparently interpreted that result as evidence that Ana de Armas could not open an action movie on her own, while also treating female-led action projects as an even greater commercial risk. Iwanyk strongly rejected that interpretation.

“I think it’s lazy thinking to think, ‘Oh, Ana de Armas didn’t work in Ballerina,’” Iwanyk said, immediately clarifying that he was not accusing Belloni personally of lazy thinking. Belloni responded that he was actually making a similar criticism of the studios themselves, arguing that executives may become even less willing to finance such projects after seeing what happened with Ballerina. Iwanyk agreed with that distinction, answering: “Correct. And I think that’s lazy thinking.” In other words, he does not believe the commercial performance of a single movie should be treated as definitive proof about de Armas’ star power or the viability of female-led theatrical action films as a whole.

That was when Belloni brought up the reports involving Zendaya and Bourne, suggesting that a project of that scale might provide the clearest possible test of those assumptions. Iwanyk did not hesitate: “If Zendaya does Bourne, like that’s game over.” Belloni suggested that such a combination could genuinely break through, and Iwanyk made clear that he meant his comment positively. Even so, the challenge would be substantial because the Bourne identity remains unusually tied to Matt Damon. The Jeremy Renner-led The Bourne Legacy already attempted to create a separate branch of the franchise in 2012 but failed to establish a lasting new direction. If Universal is genuinely considering pairing Damon and Zendaya before potentially passing the torch, it would essentially be attempting that difficult transition again, only this time with one of the biggest young stars in Hollywood at the center of the plan.
