Square Enix and Disney used D23 to finally offer a much deeper look at what players can expect from the long-awaited Kingdom Hearts 4. The extended trailer confirmed a late 2027 release window while also revealing a new Disney world, playable sections for Donald, Goofy, and Mickey, and some intriguing hints about where the franchise could expand beyond video games.
The flow of new information surrounding Kingdom Hearts 4 has accelerated dramatically over the past few days. Fans had already learned that Sora and his companions will travel to the world of Coco, while an earlier trailer showed the heroes battling Heartless in the new environment. Only hours later, however, an extended version of the D23 footage surfaced and provided a much broader look at the story, gameplay systems, and characters.
Kingdom Hearts 4 Targets Late 2027 and Breaks Several Series Traditions
The biggest announcement is that Square Enix and Disney are targeting late 2027 for the launch of Kingdom Hearts 4. The game is being developed for PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. Series director Tetsuya Nomura also directly addressed online speculation that the project could eventually slip into 2028. “We announced that the game will arrive in late 2027, and I’ve seen some people saying that it might be delayed. I just wanted to make it clear: that’s not going to happen. I hope people can trust that the game will arrive in 2027,” he said.
Nomura also stressed that the promotional campaign for Kingdom Hearts 4 has “only just begun,” suggesting that considerably more information will emerge over the coming months. According to the game’s official synopsis, Sora travels with familiar companions through the mysterious city of Quadratum while dark creatures throw the area into chaos. His journey will once again carry him into worlds inspired by Disney and Pixar movies, where he will meet new characters and awaken additional abilities.
The extended footage makes it clear that the Coco setting will be much more than a brief diversion. Sora appears to spend a substantial amount of time there and even wields a Keyblade themed around Héctor’s guitar. One of the biggest gameplay surprises, however, is the confirmation that Donald and Goofy will become fully playable for the first time in the franchise. The footage also shows the pair traveling into the world of Coco while searching for Sora.
Mickey Mouse will be controllable during certain portions of the game as well, although his sequences operate very differently from Sora’s adventure. Co-director Tai Yasue explained that Mickey enters a magical book and transforms into a paper, origami-like version of himself, gaining the ability to create tiny and enormous duplicates. “If you throw it, it becomes a paper airplane and you can fly it,” Yasue explained. He described these sections as deliberately distinct from Sora’s gameplay, giving them a notably fresh and unusual identity.
Square Enix has also confirmed that an animated series based on the Kingdom Hearts universe is in development for Disney+. Nomura and Square Enix’s creative team are collaborating on the project, although no release date has been announced yet. The possibility of a theatrical adaptation has not been completely dismissed either, as Walt Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush discussed the franchise’s broader future during an interview with IGN.
When the interviewer jokingly pointed out that Bush is effectively one of the people capable of approving a Kingdom Hearts movie, he deliberately left the door open. “Technically, you’re not wrong. I’m always excited to hear about what people are passionate about. We have a very promising future of new projects and different ways of bringing material out into the world. So I’ll just say that nothing is impossible,” Bush said. Disney had highlighted only days earlier that Kingdom Hearts has grown into a billion-dollar franchise, so with new games and an animated Disney+ production already moving forward, a future theatrical project no longer sounds entirely unrealistic.
