TECH NEWS – Judging by the situation in Germany, it’s safe to say that things aren’t any better in other EU member states – quite the opposite, in fact.
The rise in RAM prices shows no signs of ending, and it is impossible to predict when the market will truly stabilize. After a period of stability in April and May, prices began to rise rapidly again in the subsequent months. As we approach the fourth quarter of this year, the situation is looking worse than ever. While we are focusing on the trend in German DDR5 prices this time, similar trends are evident in other markets around the world. The AI boom is constantly driving up RAM prices, making it nearly impossible to build a PC on a low budget. The latest price data from 3D Center reveals an alarming trend that, if it continues for much longer, will undoubtedly lead to a collapse in the PC market. This data was collected with the help of Geizhals, a popular price comparison platform that aggregates real-time component prices from several German online retailers.
According to data from August, there has been a sharp increase in prices in Germany over the past few weeks. July was the worst month for buying DDR5 RAM kits in Germany, but August is even worse. Prices have begun to rise dramatically, and we are likely to see an increase of more than 10% in the coming months. In August, the average price of DDR5 memory rose to almost five times the level seen in July last year. The price index rose from 445% to 486%, making the average DDR5 RAM kit nearly 4.9 times more expensive than last year. Looking at the RAM kits most heavily affected, almost all higher-capacity modules saw double-digit price increases. These include 64 GB, 48 GB and 32 GB DDR5 RAM kits. Only a few kits have remained unaffected in recent weeks, but even those have increased in price by more than 400% compared to July last year.
These dramatic price hikes have also driven up the cost of other devices and components, including laptops, smartphones, desktop computers, mini PCs and GPUs… and we still don’t know where this will end.
