TECH NEWS – An interesting rumor erupted on the Chinese internet and was quickly picked up by the Asian press.
According to the rumor, Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei allegedly fled China by sea just a few days before strict exit controls were set to take effect today, in a scene that seems straight out of a James Bond movie. The rumor began spreading on September 12 when several internal Huawei chat logs were leaked. The logs referred to unpaid wages and a significant police presence at the company’s headquarters. Around the same time, rumors surfaced that Ren had fled the country via the Dapeng Peninsula in Shenzhen. According to some eyewitnesses, a vehicle that may have transported his family to shore was identified. The new wave of regulations taking effect today aims to prevent China’s valuable engineering talent from transferring their expertise to industries subject to export controls and to deter them from traveling to high-risk countries, such as Japan.
The regulation allows authorities to request documents or information to verify identity and travel purpose. It warns citizens traveling to high-risk countries to exercise caution. The regulation may restrict travel to destinations subject to the highest level of warning. Citizens who commit crimes abroad that undermine China’s national security will face a travel ban ranging from six months to three years upon their return. Citizens who violate export control or technology trade regulations, or who may jeopardize national industrial or technological security, will no longer be permitted to leave the country. Individuals associated with China’s electric vehicle, solar panel, and rare earth metal industries will now be subject to heightened scrutiny.
Currently, there is no credible evidence suggesting that Huawei’s CEO has fled the country. Nevertheless, it stands to reason that Huawei executives will now be subject to stricter border controls, especially given China’s strategic importance of the tech giant. Additionally, Huawei’s CEO’s family has reportedly been cut off from the outside world since September 11. Notably, Huawei has not issued a denial, which only fuels further speculation at this stage.
This is the most intriguing development surrounding Huawei since at least 2020, when the company’s CFO was arrested in Canada and faced extradition to the United States for allegedly violating U.S. sanctions against Iran.
