Hideki Kamiya has once again placed himself at the center of a social-media storm. The creator of Bayonetta first dismissed The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker in unusually harsh terms, then answered players who objected with a barrage of personal insults.

The argument began as Japan marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the GameCube. Kamiya asked users on X to name the console’s true masterpiece, prompting fans to share favorite games and personal memories. One player described Wind Waker as a treasured part of childhood, but the designer’s response quickly changed the tone.

Kamiya targets the sea and the Wind Waker

Kamiya said that, to him, the game amounted to meaninglessly waving a baton at sea, changing the wind and searching for treasure chests. The opinion itself was not the only source of anger: many users felt the blunt reply was needlessly hostile toward somebody simply recalling a beloved childhood experience.

Some players asked him to show other creators the same respect he expects for his own work. Others criticized his previous games or accused him of chasing attention. Kamiya did not step back. Instead, he answered with increasingly personal attacks, directing abusive language even at users whose only complaint concerned his tone.

A daily posting limit could not stop him

After so many replies, Kamiya reportedly reached the fifty-post daily limit applied to free X accounts. He then paid for Premium so that he could continue responding. In his own account of the episode, he said he had replied too often to the people he called “insects” and therefore had little choice but to subscribe.

Kamiya has long been famous for blocking large numbers of users, yet this exchange went unusually far even by that standard. His insults were not limited to Wind Waker defenders: a fan asking for the Bayonetta trilogy on Nintendo Switch 2 also received a hostile reply.
