Jason Momoa Cast Himself in Street Fighter

MOVIE NEWS – Jason Momoa did not wait for anyone to offer him the role of Blanka in the new Street Fighter: he put himself forward for it.

Director Kitao Sakurai (The Eric Andre Show, Twisted Metal) told Empire magazine that the actor’s enthusiasm made every conventional casting procedure unnecessary. “I didn’t actually cast him. He simply told me: you’re making Street Fighter now, and I’m playing Blanka in it.”

The choice is hardly surprising. One of the video game series’ best-known characters, Blanka is a green-skinned, wild-looking fighter who shocks his opponents with electrical discharges – the kind of role for which Momoa‘s physical presence and irrepressible energy, not to mention his superhero past, seem particularly well suited. The actor is also involved in making the film as a producer.

Sakurai previously made it clear that he did not want to take the character too seriously: Street Fighter embraces the video game’s loud humor and deliberate exaggeration. By all indications, Momoa‘s Blanka fits perfectly into that world.
