Back in 2011, Sony’s systems sustained a hacker attack and the user accounts of 77 million people were compromised. Sony suffered a huge loss in public relations that year, and it took them more than a few years to regain the faith of its users.
A lawsuit was quickly issued from the attack, which has now finally been settled. Sony agreed to pay $15 million to settle the case. The settlement is pending a judge’s approval.
The settlement also includes a free PS3 or PSP game for those who were affected, and a three month subscription to PS Plus as well. If you do remember, there were similar offer from Sony with the “Welcome Back” program after the breach, which offered people a free game and free PS Plus.
Unfortunately for players living in other countries the settlement will only apply to American gamers, as the lawsuit is brought in the US.
As for the $15 million it will go mainly to the lawyers who filed the suit against Sony, as it’s usually what happens in cases like these. It’s a well-known fact, that the only people who get rich from class-action lawsuits are the lawyers.
The rest of the money actually won’t be handed out to those affected, as it will probably result in just a few pennies to each person. Instead, Sony will offer free games and free PS Plus subscriptions, as noted above.
