Disney Infinity has become one of the biggest toys-to-life franchise next to Activision’s Skylanders. However, Infinity is now ending its production – why is this happening, you might ask?
According to the statement on Venturebeat, Disney Interactive says „we have modified our approach to console gaming and will transition exclusively to a licensing model. This shift in strategy means we will cease production of Disney Infinity, where the lack of growth in the toys-to-life market, coupled with high development costs, has created a challenging business model.”
The story doesn’t end there, though: „This means that we will be shutting down Avalanche Software, our internal studio that developed the game. This was a difficult decision that we did not take lightly given the quality of Disney Infinity and its many passionate fans.” Avalanche became part of the Disney family in 2005 – they made Cars 2’s game adaptation, for example, but before that, they also made 25 To Life, or Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.
Skylanders is staying alone on the market with Warner Bros’ LEGO Dimensions, if we don’t count Nintendo’s amiibos. Is the trend changing?
