We were expecting God of War to get a sequel, but there’s more than meets the eye…
Cory Barlog, the game’s director, showed up in Kotaku‘s Splitscreen podcast, where he said the following: „I want to figure out how to make these things faster, man. I think this [God of War] — a big portion of the five years was, we had to start from scratch. We had a core engine, but we redid a lot of stuff. Everything needed to be redone, because we just had torn the engine apart in so many different ways that when we finally brought the team together, everyone realized, ‘OK, this is not where it needs to be.’
So even when you see E3 2016, the rendering engine wasn’t there, the lighting engine was half-there, the atmospheric engine was half-there. The core mechanics were there, but a lot of the way we were streaming and loading everything was still getting worked out, and figuring out how we were going to get it logistically to work. We knew what we wanted; we didn’t know technologically how we were going to get it in the right order.”
He explained why God of War‘s development required five years. How many sequels does he want, though? Not one, not two, but FIVE! Cory Barlog planned SIX games, which is way too much…
Sony will likely commission him and SIE Santa Monica to begin work on the sequel, but if there will be too many God of War games, the franchise could fall to „Assassin’s Creeditis,” aka way too many sequels, even though Kratos and Atreus are on the top at the moment…
On the top indeed, UKIE published last week’s physical game sales chart in the United Kingdom, and it shows that God of War retained its first place. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life also kept the third place (however, if we include the Nintendo Labo Variety Kit, which isn’t a video game technically, it would be in the third spot), and Far Cry 5 also stayed in the second position…
